The Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme is a reform policy by the Federal Government of Nigeria designed to provide free, compulsory, and universal 9-year continuous education for every child. This spans 6 years of Primary Education and 3 years of Junior Secondary Education (JSS 1-3).
The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) is the state executive agency overseeing basic education. LASUBEB manages school infrastructure development, teacher recruitment and welfare, curriculum compliance, and state-wide education funding across public primary and junior secondary institutions.
The Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) Ikorodu acts as the operational administrative arm of LASUBEB at the local level. While LASUBEB Formulates policies, LGEA Ikorodu executes day-to-day supervision of primary schools, staff deployments, local community mobilization, and infrastructure monitoring across Ikorodu Division.
Yes. Under the UBE Act and Lagos State Government directive, basic education in all public schools is 100% free. Tuition, basic textbooks, and learning digital devices under state programs are provided without mandatory charges to parents or guardians.
Yes. Under the UBE Act 2004 and the Lagos State Child Rights Law, every parent or guardian is legally obligated to enroll their child of school age into primary and junior secondary school. Failure to do so is a prosecutable civil offense.
Public basic education is entirely free. If any staff member demands unauthorized fees for admission, tuition, or basic textbooks, parents should report the incident immediately to the LGEA Secretariat via the Admin & Human Resources or Basic Education Quality Assurance (BEQA) desk for prompt investigation and disciplinary action.
Parents/guardians should visit the public primary school nearest to their residence with the following requirements:
- Child's official Birth Certificate or sworn Declaration of Age.
- Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) card details of parent/guardian.
- Recent passport photographs of the child and parent/guardian.
- Immunization/medical record card (where applicable).
To transfer a student, the parent/guardian must submit a formal request to the current school Head Teacher. Upon approval, the school generates an official Transfer Certificate, which must be presented to the LGEA School Support Services section at our Secretariat for official endorsement and re-assignment.
Yes. In alignment with the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP) and ongoing state initiatives, eligible pupils in early primary classes receive a free, daily nutritious meal designed to boost enrollment, increase retention rates, and promote healthy child development.
Absolutely. Holistic child development is a core mandate of the UBE. Schools across Ikorodu actively participate in inter-house sports, cultural arts, spelling bees, debate competitions, and various state-wide extracurricular programs coordinated by the School Support Services division.
EKOEXCEL (Excellence in Child Education and Learning) is a flagship digital transformation initiative by the Lagos State Government. It equips primary school teachers with standardized digital tablets containing real-time lesson plans, enabling automated teacher attendance tracking and data-driven learning assessment in public classrooms.
Quality assurance is maintained through the Basic Education Quality Assurance (BEQA) officers who conduct unannounced, routine monitoring visits to schools. They assess teacher lesson plans, classroom delivery, infrastructure safety, and pupil learning records to ensure alignment with state standards.
The SBMC bridges the gap between the school and the host community. Comprising local community leaders, artisans, parents, and school staff, the committee oversees school welfare, ensures child retention, protects school infrastructure, and promotes grassroots involvement in basic education management.
Yes. Ikorodu LGEA maintains designated Inclusive Education Units equipped with specialized instructional materials and trained special-education personnel. Parents seeking placement for children with physical or learning impairments can contact the LGEA Special Education Desk for referral to the nearest equipped school.
Community members, CDA leaders, or parents can report out-of-school children to the LGEA Social Mobilization Section. Our field officers conduct grassroots interventions, home visitations, and community enlightenment to ensure affected children are safely reintegrated into basic schools.
Staff members can check official circulars and deployment lists directly at the Administration & Human Resources Section at the LGEA Secretariat Complex, or consult official notices issued through their respective Head Teachers.
Head teachers must submit an official Condition Survey Report accompanied by photos to the LGEA Environmental & School Facilities Unit. Major structural projects are escalated to the LASUBEB Infrastructure Department for procurement and execution.
All procurement, civil works, and supply tenders are managed in compliance with the Lagos State Public Procurement Law. Interested vendors must be registered on the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency (PPA) portal and respond to official Expressions of Interest (EOI) published by LASUBEB.
